Ayurveda: The Natural Path to Weight Loss

Natural weight loss methods have come back into fashion in the recent years. The emergence of organic products and homeopathic healing methods as safer and more viable options to chemical products and invasive procedures have further strengthened the resolve of a growing number of individuals and groups regarding the dangers of traditional weight loss products and methods.

Originating from India, the Ayurveda system believes in three regulatory substances: vata (wind, spirit, air), kapha (phlegm) and pitta (bile). They comprise the Dosha or principles which work in accordance with one another unless affected negatively by a malfunctioning metabolic system.

The doshas are composed of the essential divine elements: air, fire, water, earth and space. Kapha is comprised of earth and water elements and is therefore an imbalance of either can lead to obesity obesity.

Pitta can also lead to obesity when those with this type of disposition are burned out and the stress affects the fire or digestive process.

Those with Vata dispositions generally become underweight when an imbalance occurs, since they cannot properly absorb nutrients in their food. But when they start eating too much sugar and oil-laden food to compensate for this, it can also lead to rapid weight gain.

Ayurvedic Treatments

In order to facilitate weight loss, Ayurveda recommends the following treatments to rid the body of toxic elements:

  • Surgery
  • Treatment of diseases above the clavicle
  • Internal medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Paediatrics
  • Toxicology
  • Prevention or building immunity
  • Aphrodisiacs

Ayurveda also advocates the use of plant-based medications such as cinnamon and sesame seed oil.

Ayurveda is about regulating your body functions in such a way that each component, be it mind, body or soul act in accordance with each other in a harmonious manner. It will require the constant resetting of your body schedule and being in tune with your needs.

One of the principal aims of Ayurveda is to eliminate ama which is the term for inefficient digestion leading to the build-up of undigested food in the body. Treatment for this includes ingesting herbs like black pepper, barberry and ginger. Since one of the main characteristics of ama is heaviness, it is imperative to purge this from the system before attempting any other treatment.
