On “The Biggest Loser” contestants are encouraged to chew sugar free gum and you will often see them popping it in. Sure, the gum companies love this. But, is there some truth behind it? Should people be chewing gum to lose more weight?

What Gum Does For You.

Gum doesn’t have nutrients that make weight loss happen or any secret ingredients that cause weight loss. Instead they have a few facts that back up the idea.

  • Chewing gum burns an extra 11 calories an hour. That isn’t much, but it is more than the gum itself adds to your diet.
  • Sugar free gum adds a few calories to your diet for each stick that you consume.
  • Often sugar free gum adds enough sweet to your life that you don’t crave sweets near as much.
  • Additionally, it is hard to snack on foods when you are chewing gum. This can make you avoid snacks you other wise wouldn’t avoid.
  • The additional saliva produced from chewing can also help make you feel fuller. This in turn can make you eat fewer calories in your meals and snacks.
  • Studies show that chewing gum can reduce stress (which causes weight gain from flight or fight response) and helps elevate the mood which is also good for weight loss. Positive thinking can be a wonderful tool in weight loss.

When To Chew Gum.

Chew gum whenever you are feeling tempted to eat something you know you don’t need. We often snack out of habit, comfort, and to solve cravings. Pop in a stick of gum instead. Have it with you where ever you go.

Sugar Free Gum Sweeteners.

There are two things that should be considered. First some gum is sweetened with aspartame. While the number of gums that contain this sweetener has become a lot fewer there are still a few. Aspartame may cause a lot of dangerous health problems and really should be avoided in our diets.

Second many other gums are sweetened with sorbitol. This sweetener doesn’t have the negative that aspartame has, but it is a natural laxative. If you consume a lot of it each day then you can get chronic diarrhea. It takes a lot of gum, about 18 sticks or more, but it can cause issues. Make sure that you are chewing your gum in moderation.

Variations.

Gum comes in a million flavors these days. Have fun with it and try new types. You can then find your favorites based on flavor and how long the gum lasts.

Results.

In order to see real weight loss results chewing gum needs to be added to a healthy diet and exercise program. Chewing alone won’t make you lose a significant amount of weight.

By adding a little gum to your life you can help prevent cravings, avoid eating, and lose more weight. While this doesn’t contain any miracle to it, it really does work and can make a huge difference in your life.
