Many people only eat beans when they are refried. However, there are a lot of great benefits to beans and they are great weight loss foods. They have almost complete nutrition and they are also a great source of lower fat protein.

What Beans Do For You.

Beans have a lot of nutrition. They will add to your healthy diet. This in turn makes it easier for you to lose weight because you are healthier.

  • Beans have a lot of soluble fiber and protein making them a food that sticks with you and helps keep you full.
  • Beans also have a large amount of insoluble fiber which helps with healthy digestion.
  • Beans also help to keep your blood sugar levels even and make it less likely that you will crave foods, particularly sugars.
  • Beans are also easily seasoned without adding a lot of fat to them making them a tasty addition to your diet.

The Gas Issue.

Everyone has at least heard of what happens when you eat beans. The saying many kids are taught goes something like, “Beans, beans musical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot”. Well it is true that the digestive system causes a lot of gas when it isn’t used to eating beans (or other foods such as broccoli). There are two things you can do. First, eat beans in small amounts to begin with and do so before you are going to be active. The more you move afterwards the more you break the gas up. Second, eat them on a regular basis. This will make it so that your body gets used to it.

Buying Beans.

Beans can be found in two options. First you can buy canned beans which offer a lot of convenience because they don’t have to be soaked to be eaten. The other option is to buy dried beans. They are very inexpensive this way and come in a huge variety of options.

Preparing Dry Beans.

If you choose to make beans from the dried option you will need to soak ahead. Go through your beans and pull out pebbles, odd shaped beans, and shriveled ones. Rinse the beans under cold running water to remove dirt and any left over debris. Then you will want to soak the beans in water. This should be done at least six hours, but preferably over night.

You will then want to toss all the soaking water and add fresh. Cover the beans with about one to two inches more water and simmer on the stove till tender. This is at least one hour, but could take three or four for tougher varieties.

Finally you need to season the beans to go with the dishes you will be adding to them. Beans can be made into soup, added to rice, put in tortillas, mixed with eggs, and all sorts of other things. Get creative and add beans to your diet regularly. Aim for once or twice a week!
