How Are Health and Weight Loss Really Connected?

Do you think that your health and weight loss are connected, or that you need to lose weight to be healthy? Have you been told by your doctor that you need to shed some pounds in order to protect your health? Or are you thinking that you can be healthy and have excess weight at the same time?

Really, how might your health and weight loss be connected? There are no easy answers to this and obviously you should pay attention to your doctor more than anyone else. Every person’s situation is different and everyone’s health concerns are different as well. What a doctor tells you in person is always going to be more accurate than what anyone else tells you.

Weight and Your Health Overall

But there are some general guidelines you can follow when you think about health and weight loss overall. For one thing, excess body weight does put quite a bit of stress and strain on your joints, your back, and other areas. The knees and back especially need to move around the weight of the body and when you’re overweight, they work overtime to do this.

It’s not unusual for someone that’s overweight to feel the strain on their knees and back and to suffer torn cartilage, tendons, and herniated or slipped discs. These things are very painful and unfortunately they can also become permanent. The damage that is done to these areas of the body often cannot be corrected or may require surgery to correct. And of course if a person does not lose the weight, they’ll have these problems over and over again.

Another reason that health and weight loss are connected is that excess weight puts strain on the respiratory system as well. A person that is overweight can struggle to breathe and may have problems with asthma and even allergies. Pressure is put on the lungs especially when a person sleeps, and this can lead to struggling with breathing at night.

Weight, Your Diet, and Your Health

Too much weight can also mean a buildup of cholesterol in the system if the weight is the result of a fatty diet. That cholesterol can mean an increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and other problems with the circulatory system. Changing the diet to reduce the amount of fat you ingest can help both your health and weight loss as well.

Some believe that you can be overweight and be healthy and certainly everyone is different. There may be some who are overweight and that don’t experience these health problems in any way. But usually health and weight loss are very much connected, and a person may want to consider shedding some pounds to safeguard their health.

And remember that it’s usually better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your own health and your weight. If you’re not sure if your weight is affecting your health, see your doctor and pay attention to what he or she says, and be ready to make changes if necessary.
