How To Spot Diet and Weight Loss Scams
You’ve heard them and seen them. They’re all over the place, in magazine ads, online ads, fliers and emails – telling you what you’ve always wanted to hear. They come in different forms, and some of them may be familiar. What are they? Diet ads and weight loss, of course.
But they’re not just regular diet and weight loss ads, they’re the ones that border on the magical. “Lose weight without diet!”, “Eat all you want but still lose weight!”, “Lose weight without doing anything, Call me now!” Some even come in seductive brochures that have full colored before and after pictures, and some come with plenty of free gifts, offers and guarantees.
Are They For Real?
However tempting it is to believe them, and however desperate you need to lose weight – don’t. Stand back a little bit from all the excitement and hype that comes with finding a “miracle solution” to all your weight problems. When things sound too good to be true, most of the time they probably are. These weight loss solutions offer plenty of promises, take your money and leave you with nothing.
To know if these products are for real, think about these questions first: If these claims and offers were all true, wouldn’t the worlds press be all over these potions, patches and supplements? Isn’t it highly unlikely that they let you in on the juice out of the blue and not let the media know about it first? If this product works miraculously, how come you haven’t heard of this – ever?
What To Do?
The Federal Trade Commission or FTC recommends potential buyers to closely take a look at weight loss products and advertisements with a dose of skepticism. While there may be weight loss products that actually do work, the FTC warns that most advertisements that promise fast results by simply taking in supplements, using creams or wearing patches and not requiring you to make any lifestyle changes are almost always false.
Before making any quick and hasty decision that can set you back a few (or a lot of) dollars, or even do damage to your health, you should be informed about the basics involving weight loss and dieting. Thus, whether you plan to take those magic products or go through the normal diet and exercise route, you should always consult your doctor.
What To Look Out For
Of course, as a general rule – when something sounds too good to be real, it probably is. Here are some claims that you should always look out for diets and products that claim to help you lose weight without any exercise, lose weight without giving up your favorite foods, lose weight and not diet again, lose a lot of weight in thirty days, and lose weight while using creams and patches.
Because essentially, while some products do work and help you lose some weight, you can only completely do so with proper diet and the right exercise – and you only keep weight off by maintaining what you have started.
