Kids – When Should They Start Losing Weight?

| July 31, 2009 | 0 Comments

Obesity has become a huge problem right now, and is reported to cause deaths in more people than smoking. We usually see adults facing this problem, but kids too, can have weight problems. Now, the question is, when should kids start losing weight?
After all, we’ve all loved them as chubby little babies and toddlers, with their round cheeks and stubby little fingers. So when do we say that enough is enough, and when should they be go on a diet or a weight loss program? If ever there is one, of course.

Who’s Fault Is This Anyway?
Before we start pointing fingers, it would be safe (and correct) to say that the fault is a combination of many. And surely, never the child’s. A child’s eating life begins when he is yet an infant, and he follows what he has been used to. It is not his fault if he can finish a big bag of chips in one sitting, or if he choses hot dogs over green salad, because he has been taught to prefer these things.
Our fast paced lives have given the rise to fast food and quick meals, as well as easy to purchase and easy to serve junk foods. Most parents also think of doing something nice for their kids by giving them these treats, because that’s what’s usually seen on tv.

So, Should Your Child Go On A Diet?
Supposing your child is way over the normal weight range. Should you force him to go on a diet? Say, give him half a burger instead of one? The answer is no. Because you see, cutting your child’s diet into half, but still giving him the same unhealthy kinds of food will not change anything. It will only make him hungrier, and will only put eating in a negative light.

What Should Be Done?
That does not mean, however, that you shouldn’t do anything for your child. You can still help them lose weight, but in a more positive manner, as weight loss should be. You can do this at any time, and at any age, because what you are doing isn’t a strict weight loss program. It’s actually a lifestyle change.
You can do this by changing the way they eat, and changing the foods that you serve at home is one good step. Serve plenty of fruits and vegetables, and steer away from foods rich in sugar and in fats. In fact, you should start them young on healthy foods.

Don’t Discourage Eating
If your child loves to eat, do not discourage it. The key is not in how much your child eats, but what he eats. Would you have him rather finish a plate and a half of whole – grain pasta and two servings of sautéed vegetables, or two burgers and a plate of fries?
Getting your child to exercise is also one great way to help him lose weight. In todays day and age, most children have turned into couch potatoes, munching away in front of the television or the computer. To get your child to exercise, you don’t have to bring him to the gym or make him lift weights. Take your child out for a good walk or run, or a good game in the park. Encourage his love for the outdoors by engaging in outdoor activities or sports that he will enjoy.

These are simple ways that will not only help your child lose weight, but will also help him become healthy. Remember that losing weight should not be rushed. Weight loss for children should not only focus on their bodies, but should mainly be about their overall health as well.
