Some doctors believe that obesity and the condition of being overweight is a physical ailment, while some people believe that being overweight is a psychological condition. In the event that it is a physical condition, obesity can be cured by physical methods. However, if obesity and being overweight is a psychological condition, then it can only be cured by mental treatment such as therapy. Hence, some people believe in this method and they try to treat obesity as a mental illness.

How is Obesity a Mental Condition?

In many cases, most mental health professional will agree that obesity is considered as a mental problem. Sometimes, some people will try to eat excessively due to various mental triggers. This can be a very uncomfortable position as each time you have an emotional problem; you will try to solve it by eating your way out. This may not be a very preferable treatment as lots of events and objects can acts as emotional triggers.

You don’t need to feel in despair, as group therapy has been known to help overcome these mental problems. Some psychologists consider overeating and obesity as a form of addiction (like alcohol addiction, drug addiction, smoking addiction). Hence the same methods that are used in alcohol addiction are used in treating obesity. You are subjected to various group therapy and psycho therapy so that you are able to overcome these problems and emotional triggers. Often it has been shown that group motivation can be extremely helpful.

How to Lose Weight with Group Motivation

  • Make sure that everyone around you is aware of your weight loss program so that they can give you the support that you need. This includes your family, your loved ones, your friends, your co workers and your colleagues.
  • Make sure that you have a social safety net around you. This means that everyone around you socially should support your decision to lose weight completely so that anytime you are swerving off path they will be able to correct you.
  • Have special peers that you can call anytime that you feel like breaking your weight loss promise to yourself. Just like alcohol therapy, you will need to have a system of sponsors that can vouch for you.
  • Make sure that you are able to enter into group therapies and group motivation sessions as this will allow you to overcome these aversions as much as possible.
  • Keep up a good program of weight loss that incorporates eating less and exercising more in order for you to succeed in burning all of those extra calories.
