Proper Nutrition For People Over 40

Although turning 40 is not to be dreaded in any way, depending on your past eating habits, it could also bring various heart diseases, diabetes or bone diseases to your door. In simple words, 40 is an age where God might just be trying to convey to you that this could be the last chance to shape up or ship out. Even if you have been eating unhealthy foods in the past, you can resolve to start eating healthy if you are just about to turn 40 or have just turned 40 recently.

What Is So Different At 40?
As your body starts nearing 40, there will be hormonal and physical changes taking place inside your body. Your body might no longer be able to process additional calories as efficiently as before. This might result in some fat piling on to your body even if you eat the same amount of calories as before. An unhealthy diet with no exercise, compounded by smoking and heavy drinking could just become a disaster waiting to happen.

But How Can I Suddenly Stop Eating All That Yummy Stuff?
You do not need to suddenly stop whatever unhealthy foods that you could be currently eating but rather phase them out. If you stop suddenly then you would not only suffer from hunger pangs but you might start to binge out even more after a certain time. You should start slowly but firmly. Cut down on cheese, butter, red meat, mayonnaise, cookies, pastries, pancakes and ice-creams and slowly replace these items with chicken, egg-whites, cereals, whole grain breads, salads, fresh fruits, vegetables, non-cream soups and low-fat ice creams or yogurt. Instead of frying your dishes to make them tasty but unhealthy, try grilling or shallow-frying them. This will cut down your oil intake. You can buy a quick guide from the bookstore and study about the calories present in various foods. You can also browse the Internet to get healthy tips on how to cook your food with the right herbs such as ginger and garlic. This will ensure that your dish turns out to be tasty even without the use of excessive oil. You can binge out once in a fortnight if you feel that you are still not able to let go of your past eating habits although you will need to burn it off with proper exercise.

Do I Have To Exercise?
Of course, remember God, last chance? Since your body’s metabolism will start to slow down, it will become increasingly difficult to process those incoming calories and some of it will get converted to sticky fat. In order to raise your body’s metabolism and also to stay away from crippling diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and heart disease in the future, you will have to indulge in any physical exercise of your choice. If you are already quite fit then you can even go in for some serious body-building and cardio exercises but if you are exercising after a long break, then start off by walking, cycling or swimming.

So, turning 40 should not be looked with dread but rather as a chance to embark on a nutritional program that can be followed for a long time and which should be complemented with a suitable exercise routine.
