Introduction

Teamwork. Teamwork is often attributed to success in all walks of Life from sports to work to charity. Almost everything can be done more efficiently in a team environment. One person can build a house in 6 months but perhaps two people can do it in 3 months!

Teamwork is heavily promoted in the workplace. Businesses can’t survive unless they have well-defined teams that work together to reach a goal. The Boston Celtics couldn’t have won a professional basketball championship without all players contributing.

Teamwork and Weight Loss

So, what does teamwork have to do with weight loss? Isn’t it up to the individual person to lose the weight they want to? While this may be true, having other people trying to lose weight by your side can be a powerful motivator.

Other people trying to reach the same goal will help their partners challenge themselves to do it. If you’re trying to lose weight on your own, who’s going to tell you not to eat that cheeseburger? Who will scold your for not exercising the days you are supposed to exercise?

Organizing Teams for Losing Weight

People can organize themselves toward the goal of losing weight in multiple ways. Groups of people can setup a competition where there is an extra reward for the person who loses the most weight. Additionally, groups can promise to help each other lose a certain amount of weight per week together.

Teams that are working together on weight loss can also agree to a common indulgence during their journey. For example, a weight loss group can agree to have pizza on Sunday nights after their exercise as a reward for hard work that week. Similarly, teams can start tracking pounds lost by person and the team for motivation.

The Importance of Milestones and Celebrations

Milestones are critically important for reaching any goal. In this context, the weight loss teams can set an overall goal of losing 30 pounds per person in 6 months. The team can then agree to lose 5 pounds a month until this goal is reached.

Having the monthly goal will allow the team to track progress to the overall goal and help those not losing the weight get on track. Once goals are reached they should be heavily celebrated as it is a big accomplishment. Having a team who reached the same goals do this together is more valuable than nothing and should be celebrated.
Group Exercise

Another very valuable aspect of losing weight as a team is having exercise partners. Exercise can be very difficult to keep up with if you’re doing it on your own. Having other people there to challenge you on that jog helps push you more for success.

Competitions for exercise can also be a good motivator for losing weight. For example, the person in the group who can run the fastest gets to choose the pizza toppings for that particular Sunday night get together. Again, the motivation of having others trying to do what you are will push you to succeed.

Conclusion

Where possible, as you go through your weight loss, team-based activities should be pursued. Working in a team will light a fire under you to improve yourself, even if your motivation is to defeat the others trying to lose weight in competitions! It is possible to lose weight ok without a team, however it greatly improves your odds to have a partner.
