When it comes to weight loss, obesity, and people who are overweight you often hear about the metabolism. Many reputable people have taught the population that they need to fix their metabolisms. This word gets thrown all around, but what is the truth about your metabolism?

The Metabolism Myth.
While there are a lot of reputable people who talk about eating, exercising, and taking supplements for boosting the metabolism. Some use other phrases such as maximizing and fixing the metabolism. But the truth is there is a very slim chance that there is anything wrong with your metabolism. These phrases have become a gimmick for people looking to sell books, DVD’s, and programs.

Low Metabolisms.
There are a few people who have medical conditions in which case they really do have lower metabolisms. There aren’t many of them and they are often discovered by a doctor through regular appointments. If you really do think your metabolism isn’t normal then you should talk to your doctor.

Defining the Metabolism.
Metabolisms are the process of chemical reactions which burn calories to allow life and produce energy. That’s quite a mouthful, but your metabolism works at a constant rate to produce the energy you need. In order for it to burn more calories and fat your body needs to require more energy. It isn’t going to happen with certain foods, magical pills or supplements, or even special exercises.

Increasing The Amount of Energy Your Body Uses.
While you can’t increase your metabolism, you can increase the amount of energy that your body needs in order to function. To do this you need to build up lean muscle mass. Lean muscle takes more energy, even when at rest, to function then other tissues of the body.

Base Metabolic Rate.
Your base metabolic rate, BMR, is how much energy (measured in calories) your body needs while it is at rest and not doing anything physical. You BMR can change according to you bodies needs. This is where the lean muscle mass comes in. Your BMR will be higher if you have more muscle which needs more energy, even at rest than fat, even at rest.

Building Lean Muscle Mass.
To build lean muscle mass you will need to exercise your muscles to they continue to develop. This can include aerobic exercise and also weight training. This will take work and there is no quick and easy solution.

Healthy Lifestyle.
To burn the most fat and the most calories quickly you need to live a healthy lifestyle. This should include a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. It should also include a lot of water which helps the body function correctly. Finally you should exercise regularly. This should be at least three times a week thirty minutes a day or more.

While you can’t fix your metabolism because it isn’t broken, you can increase your base metabolic rate by building lean muscle. You can build lean muscle with a healthy lifestyle.
