Calorie can be defined in many other ways like the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of water by 1 degree. If you find this very scientific, then what would be the bearing of calorie to weight loss?

Calorie, what is it…

Calorie means the energy needed for our body to be able to run. Simply put it this way, if your car needs gasoline to run its engine then our body needs calories to run its vital organs and the body itself. We can get calorie from everything that we eat or drink, even that one piece of tiny candy may contain calorie. Beverages can also contain calorie, soft drinks are called “empty calories”. Empty calorie means there is no added nutritional value on that piece except from its calorie.

Calories can be in many forms like carbohydrates, protein, fat and sugar. Whatever source we get our calories, still it plays an integral part to weight gain.

Caloric needs… what about it?

Caloric needs simply means the amount of calorie needed for a person to be able to function fully. The average caloric need for a normal healthy person is about 2000 calories per day. But of course there are many exceptions on it.

1.Men can actually take more calories than 2000 because men consume more energy for they got more muscles in the body.
2.Women can take less than 2000 calories because they got smaller muscle mass as compared to men.
3.Athletes needed more calories than 2000 because they burn energy a lot. Athletes perform serious physical training thus their physical activity is higher than a normal person.
4.Older people may consume less than 2000 calories due to decreased physical activity.

The key on caloric needs simply rely on the level of our activity. The more we move and do physical activity the more we need more energy to supply our body. The more energy we needed the more calories we should take.

How does calorie plays an important role to weight gain?

If we consume more calories than what we need, we have to burn these calories for it not to be stored as fats. Unburned or unused calories would be stored inside the body and later it would be developed as fat. 3500 calories consumed and unused can be turn into one pound of fat. Imagine this situation:

If, for a day you only need 2000 calories but you are consuming 3000 calories you are in excess of 1000 calories a day. Based from the computation above, within 3-4 days of consuming 3000 calories you would definitely gain 1 pound. Over a month you can gain more or less 5 pounds of weight.

Taking off 500 calories per day can guarantee you about one pound per week weight loss. Together with exercise and right diet you can easily lose weight just by having some discipline to yourself.
