Want A Healthier Diet?

Are you planning to diet? Today there are so many diet plans to choose from. Some diets are very strict while some are not. Some diets emphasis on low carbohydrates, some on low protein or high protein. Each diet has a number of followers. While some diets have proved to be successful, some diets have seen failure. Some of the important diets are Atkins Diet, The South beach diet and the Zone Diet. Just following a diet cannot achieve weight loss. You have to maintain a healthy eating habit, so that you can lose weight and maintain it, and live a disease free life. Whichever diet plan you select, you can make some small changes in what you are eating to achieve the desired weight loss.

Fruits and vegetables:
As I mentioned earlier, make changes in your diet, by using your common sense. The most important food to be included in your diet is fruits and vegetables. Today many people all over the world have started eating a lot of fruits and vegetables because of its health benefits. Fruits and vegetables are low in calories, and rich in vitamins like vitamin A and vitamin C, minerals, and fiber. A diet of fruits and vegetables prevents heart diseases, aging, stroke blood pressure and even some types of cancer. You can make fruit salads or vegetables salads and take it as a meal. It is healthy and filling. Create your diet with fruits and vegetables and a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended every day.

Fish and meat:
Meat contains a lot of fat. Too much consumption of fat can cause cholesterol and heart diseases. It is best to consume lean meat which is low in fat. Red meat contains lot of fat. Meats that are low in fat and rich in proteins are turkey, beef and chicken. Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, proteins and low in fat. It is beneficial for people who have heart problems and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. American Heart Association has recommended that at least twice a week, fish should be included in your meal. Omega-3 fatty acid reduces blood pressure, blood clotting, and improves arthritis symptoms and increases learning ability in children. Salmon, herring and tuna are rich in fatty acids.

Milk and yoghurt:
If you want to drink milk, use skimmed milk or milk which is low in fat. Yoghurt is another healthy food. It is low fat, low calories and very healthy. You can have it by itself or add it to fruits or vegetable salads.

Fat and oil:
Only about 30% of fat is needed by your body. You should avoid saturated or trans fat found in milk, butter, margarine, fatty meat and palm oil etc. Instead you should consume monounsaturated fat found in olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, fish oil etc.

Processed foods:
As far as possible avoid processed foods as they are very harmful for the body. The nitrates and nitrites, coloring agents and artificial sweeteners used for preserving foods can cause nausea and vomiting and even asthma, allergy and cancer.

Everyone should decide as to what diet is suitable for them and what changes to make in their diets, to lead a trim, disease free, happy and healthy life.
