Being Calorie Conscious While Drinking Alcohol
Being calorie conscious while drinking alcohol can be a tricky thing to do, but if you are watching your weight or trying to lose weight than it is essential. Alcohol has a lot of calories and the drinks you choose to drink can have a huge impact on your diet. You should consider all these things before you deciding when, where, and what to drink.
Not Often.
A cocktail or two every now and again certainly won’t hurt anything. However, if you drink regularly and you drink a lot than there is cause for concern, especially when you are trying to lose weight. Make sure you keep it an every now and again type of activity.
Moderation.
There are a number of reasons to drink in moderation when you do drink. First is that with each drink you consume, you are adding more calories to your daily calorie count. The second is that with each drink you consume the less you are going to care, at least until later. If you drink till your inhibitions are weakened you may also find yourself consuming loads of unhealthy junk food as well as a number of calorie filled drinks.
Consider Your Alcohol.
The alcohol you choose is going to make a huge difference when it comes to the number of calories you consume. With the exception of beer and sweet liqueurs, the lighter the drink and the less alcohol it contains the fewer calories that it will have. Most hard liquor will have 60 to 100 calories per 1 ½ ounces.
Beer and Wine.
Beer and wine are a little different. You can’t count fancy wine coolers or malted beverages, but you can figure that five ounces of wine is about 100 calories, twelve ounces of light beer is about 120 calories, and twelve ounces of regular beer will usually run you about 160 to 200 calories.
Liqueurs.
Liqueurs come in a wide range of options including crème de menthe, crème de cocoa, Kaluha, and more. Each of these is certainly delicious and can make your mixed dream a dessert with stunning results, they are also high in calories and sugars. It’s best to skip them altogether.
Mixes.
What you mix your drink into is also important. You can choose diet sodas for a great low cal option. You can choose Crystal Light or another drink mix that is calorie free. Club soda is a low calorie option that can also make a great mixer. Things to avoid are those that are mixed with high sugar fruit juices like pineapple or orange juice, sugary mix drinks like margarita mix, and those with the liqueurs mixed in to it. As a rule, if it seems like a dessert it probably has calories like a dessert.
Drinking alcohol is a quick way to add up calories, especially if you don’t know what you are doing. Make sure you don’t do it often, drink in moderation, and use a little knowledge to help you make the best choices.
