Diet Plans or Lifestyle Changes?

There are a lot of people looking at losing weight. Whether it is 10 pounds or 100 there are a lot of tempting diets out there. But what is the best way to lose weight?

Defining Diets.
Diets come in all sorts of kinds. Some involve eating a variety of foods, others a single food type. They come with all sorts of names such as the grapefruit diet and the Adkins diet. All in all, they aren’t sustainable.

Problems With Diets.
There are several problems with diets, but it all boils down to not being able to keep it up. They often cause Yo Yo dieting where people diet and lose weight and then they stop dieting and gain weight again. Often they gain at least as much as they lost.

  • Many diets cause starvation. Because of this once the person finishes the diet or gives up on it they start eating a lot and their body works hard to store it up as fat in case the starvation happens again.
  • Other diets deprive people of certain foods. This causes cravings and often binging.
  • Over all, diets aren’t something you can do for the rest of your life.

Lifestyle Changes.
The difference between a diet and lifestyle changes are that lifestyle changes are basic healthy eating in a way that you can do for the rest of your life. The idea is that you work on a better “diet” and you make that healthy eating a part of your every day life.

Redefining Diet.
Once you begin working on lifestyle changes you can redefine diet. A diet in this case is everything that you eat. It is your lifestyle. It should be primarily made up of healthy foods, but it can include small portions of your favorite foods every now and again. This makes it easier to sustain.

What Makes a Good Diet.
A variety of foods is important. It should include whole grains, lean proteins, and lots of fruits and vegetables.

Sustainable.
Lifestyle changes are completely different then radical diets. That makes them sustainable.

  • You won’t be starving so your body won’t go into starvation mode.
  • You will eat a varied diet so you won’t be craving things that your body needs.
  • You also won’t have to deny yourself all of your favorites. That makes it easier not to binge on these items.

Keeping With It.
You need to work on keeping with it. It takes at least 30 days to form a habit. So once you have your lifestyle diet defined you need to work at keeping with it to make it into a habit. Give it a couple of months to really set in.

Lifestyle changes are a much better idea then dieting. Dieting causes a lot of issues, but the worst is that it doesn’t let you lose weight for long term. If you work on changing your life then you will be able to lose the weight you need to and keep it off.
