This plan recommends a ratio of 40% of carbohydrates, 30% of proteins and 30% of fat in the meals you consume everyday. According to this diet, a meal should not exceed 500 calories and snacks should not exceed 100 calories. This diet is very good for people having diabetes.
Protein in Zone Diet:
Protein is needed for the healthy functioning of our body. Proteins suppress hunger, so you happen to eat less. You also don’t feel hungry between meals. Protein increases your metabolism and protein helps your body to burn calories more than any other food. Extra protein in your body is broken into glucose, which is absorbed in your blood slowly, and balances blood glucose level, unlike glucose from carbohydrates which causes diabetes. Favorable protein foods are cottage cheese, chicken, fish, egg white, turkey breast. Avoid protein foods such as red meat.
Carbohydrates in Zone Diet:
40% of carbohydrates are recommended in the Zone Diet. Carbohydrates are of two types-good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. Good carbohydrate foods are very nutritious, high in fiber and have low glycemic index, which will hamper the rise of blood sugar level in your body, where as bad carbohydrates food are high in glycemic index which increases sugar level and causes diabetes. Fruits and vegetables are good carbs and should be included in your daily diet. Some good carb foods are beans, leafy vegetables, nuts, grain cereals and some dairy products. Bad carbs are food baked with refined white floor, carrots, potatoes, soda etc.
Fats in Zone Diet:
30% of fat is recommended in the Zone Diet plan. There are two types of fat- saturated or trans fat and monounsaturated fat. Limit the intake of saturated fat as it increases the cholesterol level. Butter is rich in saturated fat and other sources are meat, palm oil, coconut oil, and dairy products. Monounsaturated fat reduces the level of bad cholesterol in your body. They are found in olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil and avocados. Omega-3 fats are also good fats and are found in plenty in fish.
