There are a lot of words that fly around when it comes to weight loss. One is “fad diet”. Some get all excited about these diets and others just wonder what it is. So, what is a fad diet?
Simply Defined.
Simply defined a fad diet is one that is trendy, easy, and fast. They often come with weight loss guarantees or some sort of weight loss phrase such as, “Loss ten pounds in seven days”.

There are a number of examples of fad diets. One broad example are the diets based on a single food. These include the grapefruit diet, cabbage diet, or even the Special K diet. Then there are short lived diets such as the three day diet.
Sometimes Called a Fad Diet.
A lot of times other diets are also called fad diets. These include low-carb diets, low-fat diets, and the Mediterranean diet. It is debatable whether or not these diets really do fall into the fad diet category.
Look at Nutrition.
Often whether or not it is a fad diet is based on whether or not it is a nutritious diet. Is it balanced? Does it meet all of your nutrition needs? In reality many diets can fall into this category if you do your research and adjust the diet to make sure that it meets your needs.
The Difference Between a Healthy Diet and a Fad Diet.
Fad diets aren’t balanced nutritionally. They tend to lack out on major groups of nutrients which in turn can cause a deficiencies in the body. All in all, it can be a very bad thing for the body.
Recognizing Fad Diets.
It isn’t always easy to recognize a fad diet. However there are a few things to consider.
Look at the claims. If it sounds too go to be true, it will.
If it promises to have you losing more then two pounds a week, avoid it.
If it limits your food choices and doesn’t encourage balanced nutrition then its bad.
If it has only one study to back it up.
Do your research.
It is also important that you do your research. Look at what people who aren’t making money off of this diet. Look for what doctors not related to the diet say. Look for what other people say. Finally look at what science is behind it that is also not based with those trying to sell the diet.
Remember.
Weight loss should be based on a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet, exercise, and plenty of water.
There are a lot of diets out there and figuring out which one is for you is going to be really hard to do. It isn’t as simple as hearing the great news and starting up a great diet today. You need to sift through the diets out there and find the ones that you really should be trying. There are some that are based on sound nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
