Weight Loss Diets – Which One Is For You?
You’ve heard about them or read about them – they’re everywhere, from magazines, newspapers, TV or even from talking to a friend. I’m talking about diet plans. There probably are hundreds of diet plans out there just waiting for you to try them. But how do you know what to choose, and how do you know what to follow?
Here are some basic information on some of the more popular weight loss diet plans out there, so that you can easily choose what you think sounds appealing:
The Atkins Diet
The Atkins Diet, aptly known as Dr. Atkin’s New Diet Revolution was created by the late Dr. Robert Atkins. To date, it is one of the most popular low carbohydrate diets. According to the diet, it is not how much fat you eat that causes you to gain weight, but the amount of carbohydrates that you eat and how your body processes it.
This low carb but high protein diet means that you have to say goodbye to junk foods, pre packed and processed foods like chips, cookies, soda, fries and the like. But you can eat more of protein rich food like burgers, steaks and fish.
The South Beach Diet
The South Beach Diet is another diet that puts stress on the fattening powers of carbohydrates. Created by Arthur Agatston, MD, The South Beach Diet focuses on the elimination or limitation of specific carbohydrate intake, while increasing your intake of “good” fats.
The South Beach Diet has been recommended for people with diabetes, as a decreased intake of specific carbohydrates helps improve insulin resistance and helps the body metabolize what it takes in more effectively.
The 90/10 Diet
The 90/10 diet by nutritionist Joy Bauer holds this premise – you can eat “fun foods”, which are basically restricted by other diets. But the catch is that you can only eat this 10% of the time AS LONG AS you eat healthy foods 90% of the time.
The theory holds that most diets deprive you of the foods that you love to eat, and this deprivation causes you to steer away from the diet and binge – eat eventually. This diet allows you to occasionally eat the foods that you love to eat, but are deemed “untouchable” by other diets.
The Jenny Craig Program
Unlike most popular diets and weight loss programs, the Jenny Craig program has been around for more than 20 years. It has only recently gained as much popularity when celebrity Kirstie Alley, who lost 100 pounds on the program, became its spokesperson. This program involves eating portion controlled meals that are pre – packed (and sold by the program), and meeting regularly with a counselor.
The 5 Factor Diet
The 5 factor diet by celebrity fitness trainer Harley Pasternak follows the key principe of eating five meals a day. These meals must contain major components, and these are lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, fiber, good fats and a sugar free drink. The diet is actually only 50% of the plan, as the other half stresses on exercise.
These are just basic informations about these diets, and you can get more specific information whether from books or online. Whether you choose the Atkins Diet, or want to try out the Jenny Craig program, it is still very important to consult your doctor and let him know about your weight loss plan.
