Why Are Fad Diets Bad?

With weight loss high on many people’s minds these days, diets of all sorts have become more and more popular. Words get thrown about without a whole lot of understanding. One of those words is “fad diets”. Most people agree that fad diets are bad, but they never explain why.

What is a fad diet?
Fad diets are simply defined as a trendy diet that promises fast and or easy weight loss. Often they are short, based on pour nutrition, and aren’t backed up by nutritional science. Instead there are either no studies or the studies are based on whether or not you can lose weight with the diet.

What are some fad diets?
Because the definition is one that isn’t completely clear you may need some examples. The easiest to identify as a fad diet are the one food diets. These include grapefruit, cabbage, or even the Special K diet. Then there are the short lived diets such as the 3 day diet.

Other diets.
There are a wide range of other diets sometimes considered fad diets and sometimes considered healthy diets. These include the Mediterranean diet, low-carb diets, and low-fat diets. It is debatable as to whether or not these count as fad diets. Some have sound nutritional ideas and others don’t.

Do your research.
If you are on a diet and you think it might be a fad diet or that it might not be nutritionally sound then it is important to do your research. Go beyond the people selling you the diet and check out what others say about it.

What’s the big deal?
There are several things that are bad about fad diets:
They don’t address the problems that caused weight issues in the first place. This can make it easy to gain the weight back after the initial weight loss.
They aren’t something you can maintain. These diets aren’t ones that you can live off of forever. For example, how long can you live off of grapefruit and grapefruit along.
There are also health dangers associated with these diets. It isn’t healthy to eat an unbalanced diet and it can cause health problems.
The initial weight loss is water weight. This causes dehydration and isn’t a weight loss that can be maintained.
Your body goes into starvation mode when it isn’t getting enough nutrients. It will slow down how fast it burns calories and it will try to save fat for future use.
Most of these fad diets end with weight gain after the dieter stops the diet. This can even happen after a couple of days worth of normal eating or after binging which is common because the body has been deprived of what it needs to survive.

Fad diets can be dangerous. It is sometimes hard to figure out if the more complex diets have this issue, but the simpler the diet the more likely there will be issues. Do your research and avoid fad diets.
