Can Video Game Workouts Help With Weight Loss?

| November 8, 2009 | 0 Comments

Somethings sound too good to be true. With all of the talk about the Wii Fit, the question comes down to, “Can someone really lose weight with a video game?!?” After all, it sounds just a little too good to be true.

DDR.
The Wii isn’t actually the first healthy video game on the market. Years ago a game called Dance Dance Revelution was released. It has been designed for many different game consoles and can even be found at many arcades. DDR had and still has a lot to offer.
It has a game mat that the player stands on. They then need to use their feet to press the arrows and characters on the board as they come across the screen. Sounds easy enough, but it will definitely get you working out.
If you continue to play DDR you will get a workout and you can become good at it. It is also one of those things where the better you become the more likely you are to work at it.
It was never marketed as exercise, but with Nintendo’s new marketing approach for the Wii Fit, maybe it should have.

The Wii Fit.
The Wii is the next generation of video game consoles and it has been effectively marketed to all age groups and across non-gaming demographics as well as to hard core gamers. With the Wii Fit you have a whole world of games designed for getting fit and losing weight.
The Wii fit has a board that you stand on. This measures all sorts of things from your weight to the pressure that you put on the board. It’s how the game console knows how you are doing.
The Wii fit offers several games that are fun to play. You are less likely to get board because there is something for everyone and there are variations to check out.
The Wii fit is even designed to track your progress. Day one will have you finding out your weight and body mass index according to your height. You will then pick a character and over time you can see the changes that your body makes.

Do Weight Loss Games Work?
Whether you are using the Wii Fit or a fan of DDR, their effectiveness for weight loss comes down to one thing. If you are committed then these games can have a serious impact on your weight loss and will help you meet your weight loss goals.

Commitment.
Commitment often requires motivation. Both of these games can give you motivation if you want them too. The motivation for those using Dance Dance Revolution is the ability to get better if you keep at it. The motivation for the Wii is your progress as well as getting better at the games and beating the top scores. But is this enough to keep up with it?

Ultimately video game workouts have potential to help you lose weight, but it will depend on you. You will have to stick with it.
