One of the main questions related to weight loss is definitely the concept of whether you need to lose weight or not? Sometimes, a couple of extra pounds can easily be tolerated as you wont have to worry about losing weight, since weight gain can be a seasonal matter. Sometimes, due to your metabolism, you may gain a few pounds in the winter and you will be able to shed them in the winter. Or in some cases, you may have some temporary periods of inactivity which may lead to temporary weight gain. In these instances, you will be able to lose weight all by yourself without any extra intervention.

When Do You Need to Lose Weight?

You need to start on a weight loss program, if any of the conditions below are present:

  • If you have passed your normal recommended weight for your height and body composition by more than %10.
  • If your waist measurements have increased by more than 2 inches in the last 3 months
  • If you have been in an inactive lifestyle for more than 6 months
  • If you have medical conditions such as High Blood Pressure, Cardiovascular diseases (such as a weak heart), Type II Diabetes and Joint Inflammation problems
  • If you have been on a high carbohydrate diet for more than 6 months
  • If you are under too much stress due to your work conditions etc

How Can You Start to Lose Weight?

The good news is that you can start to lose weight even without starting a formal weight loss program. There is some stuff that you can do immediately to lose weight as soon as possible:

  • The first thing that you can do would be to start adapting a more active lifestyle. This is important, as becoming more active will help you to burn more calories as a result. For example, walking to nearby places (such as the post office) instead of taking your car can be a good idea. Or you may want to consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator in the places that you go to.
  • You may want to consider enrolling in a gym club or doing some sports that you like doing such as golf or racquetball.
  • Even if you don’t go on a formal diet, make sure that you stop drinking any soft drinks. Carbonated beverages are usually packed with lots of calories. In fact, recent research shows that even the diet versions may cause you to lose weight. If you refrain from drinking carbonated beverages, you may be able to save as much as 300 calories per day.
  • Try to stop using sugar or at the least reduce your sugar intake when you drink tea or coffee
  • Try drinking more green tea every day in order to increase your metabolic speed.
  • Try sleeping regularly by sleeping for at least 6 to 8 hours per day.
