Herbs and Weight Loss
Introduction
For those interested in weight loss, weight loss herbs are a better option compared to weight loss pills. This is because herbs are natural whereas most weight loss pills are synthetic. Our bodies are made to intake organic substances and so the synthetic chemicals that make up weight loss pills usually cause side effects due to destabilization of the chemical balance in our bodies. These side effects vary from one person to the next since our bodies are different. Another advantage of herbs is that they are readily available at cheap prices and you can even grow them in your garden.
Effects of herbs on the bodily functions
Some herbs work by tricking your body into thinking your body is full. Others are thermogenic which means that they accelerate body functions such as breathing, digestion and heart rate. Herbs used for weight loss also work by aiding the body to burn off calories, allowing a person’s body to secrete enough water and/or helping in dealing with the emotional problems associated with eating.
Safe and unsafe herbs
You should however note that although herbs are considered ‘natural,’ this does not necessarily mean they are always safe for human consumption. It is important to consult a professional herbalist or a doctor for information about these herbs, their suggested doses, their potential side effects, and their uses. It is always wise to go for herbs that have been approved by the relevant government agencies. Herbal laxatives such as sagrada, cascara, buckthorn, rhubarb root and aloe are sold as weight loss drugs, but they should be avoided since they have been known to cause serious side effects and even death in extreme cases.
Herb that lowers blood sugar
Garcinia cambogia is a popular herb used for weight loss. It is rich in hydroxycitric acid which promotes weight loss by blocking conversion of sugars and starches into fats and by aiding in suppressing appetite by raising some brain chemicals such as serotonin. Banana leaf is another weight loss herb and it works by lowering blood sugar and promoting healthy insulin levels which is linked to appetite. Psyllium is another popular herb and it works by creating a sense of being full. Guarana is another weight loss herb whose main ingredient is caffeine and it works by suppressing appetite. White willow bark is also popular and it works by stimulating fat metabolism.
Herbs as Appetizers
Others are cayenne or hot pepper, bitter orange which promotes a person’s appetite, green tea which increases metabolism and reduces appetite, hypernicum, citrus aurantium which converts fats into energy and cinnamon which reduces sugar levels, thus removing bad cholesterol.
Capsules and tablet processed herbs
Some herbs for weight loss come in kelp capsules or tablets to make them easier to ingest and to make them more attractive in the pharmacy shelves. Seaweed is a good example of this and it is important to note that this does not affect their effectiveness and efficiency.
Staying safe
There are many scammers out there and the only way you can protect yourself is to consult a professional herbalist, to buy from trusted sources, to read the labels. These herbs should only be used if you are unable to do exercises for one reason or the other.
