Walking is good exercise and it is good for weight loss. However, there comes a time when many people who walk, want to increase the amount of calories that they are burning. There isn’t a lot more time to add to the workout, so things need to change within the work out to increase the number of calories burned.

Pick Up The Pace.
That faster you walk that more calories you burn. Speed walking can burn a lot more calories then walking at a slower pace. Try to go as fast as you can while still being able to breath and talk because this should have you in your perfect heart rate range.

Do Interval Training.
Interval training is the process of starting slow and then going as fast as possible and slowing back down. During the fast portion of the interval you will want to go as fast as you can without having to stop to catch your breath. You will want to try to go fast for 60 seconds to five minutes. Repeat the intervals after you have caught your breath and slowed down.

Walk the Hills.
Going up hill increases the amount of energy you burn and will also help you build more muscle. Up hill workouts can done in the hilly areas of your city or you can increase the tilt on many treadmills for a more effective workout.

Go “Off Road”.
It takes more work for you to walk on grass, sand, dirt, and gravel then it does for you to walk on concrete or pavement. Because of this you can burn more calories by getting off the paved path. Go hiking, walking along the beach, or find a dirt road to walk for a better work out.

Add Weights.
Weighting yourself down will also help you burn more calories. To do this you can carry a pair of dumbbells with you or buy ankle or wrist weights. There are also weighted vests that allow you to increase the amount of weight you are carrying around. This is really good if you are loosing weight and leaning toward carrying less around with you.

Bring The Little Ones.
If you have young children then you should bring them with you. Pushing a stroller or carrying them in a baby carrier will change your workout and help you to burn more calories. This is easy to do and most kids love doing it!

Use Walking Poles.
Several years back cross country skiers started using walking poles to keep in shape. These poles are much like skiing poles but adapted to the type of surface that you will be walking on. They increase the amount of energy it takes to get around and make your walk more efficient.

Burning calories while walking is easy to do. You can change it up a little and burn more energy making it more and more effective for weight loss. Try these things and you can find out what you like best.
