Just by seeing yourself into the mirror doesn’t necessarily mean that you can address weight loss problems like obesity or overweight issues. There are more things that our naked eye cannot see. Discover the steps on how you can accurately measure your BMI and waist circumference for a healthier you.

How to measure your BMI accurately?

When we say BMI it means Body Mass Index and it is the relationship of your weight to your height. Sometimes BMI is relatively associated with body fat but it doesn’t necessarily reflect the real body fat of a person. You can calculate your BMI by using this formula:

Body Mass Index = weight of a person in pounds divided by their height in inches squared multiplied by 703. (703 is a constant number)

Example: A person weighs 160 pounds and stands 5 feet 8 inches:
160 pounds
4624 inches (convert the 5’8 to inches then squared the result)
= (160 lbs divided by 4624) multiplied by 703
= 24. 32 BMI

You can also used the premade BMI chart that you can find on the internet, just make sure it is true and reliable. If you happen to know your BMI look at these interpretations to know the meaning of your BMI

1.A person with BMI of 18.5 – 24.9 is considered as healthy individuals.
2.A person with BMI of 25 – 29.9 is considered as overweight individuals.
3.A person with BMI of 30 and above is considered obese individuals.

Take note that BMI doesn’t replace the measurement of your body fat which is more reliable than BMI. Also there are some considerations which to look forward to when measuring BMI:
Body builders can cause variable effects of BMI because they got bigger and heavier muscle mass which can confuse the results.
Aged individuals can also make false results because older people tend to have lesser muscle mass.
Same as with people who stands 5 feet below because they have less muscle mass index that can fake the BMI results.

Measuring your waist circumference the right way!

Waist area is the most common problem areas for many people, many of us carry much weight on this part rather than the other parts of the body. We need to skillfully measure our waist correctly to identify right measurements that would lead us to accurate health results.

1.Place the tape measure around the bare abdomen and ensure there is no barrier between the tape and the waist.
2.Put the tape measure correctly into the abdomen just above the hip bone, not higher or lower than it.
3.Make sure that the tape is snug but doesn’t compress your skin. The tape should be able to move freely but doesn’t come off below the waist easily. It shouldn’t be tight nor lose at the same time.
4.Relax, exhale then measure your waist. Do not exhale too far nor inhale to make the measurement.

Now you can asses if you are overweight or not by using these two methods easily!
