Is Your Diet Making You Fat?
Dieting can be a little difficult at times. One morning just deciding to lose weight and going on a rapid diet, will not get you anywhere. You have to plan a weight loss program and be optimistic, determined and disciplined in following it.
Choose a proper diet plan:
There are various diet plans, nearly twenty six thousand are said to have been published. But what suits another person might not suit you. So first of all choose a plan that suits your body and with which you are comfortable. Some people are successful, while many people complain that in spite of dieting, they still tend to put on weight instead of losing weight.
There are so many people who sincerely start a diet plan, continue it for sometime and then quit due to some reason or the other. When your diet plan fails, you immediately tend to get stressed up. Studies have shown that stress makes you fat. Some people continue their diet plans till they reach their goal, without any break in between.
But once they have lost the desired weight, they get back to munchies and foods, with lack of exercise. You are only focusing on weight loss, and not thinking of providing your body what it needs to maintain the weight. What happens then? Due to lack of body maintenance you regain all the weight you have lost, making you fat again.
Only 1-2% of the people successfully lose weight, while others either don’t reach their goal, or even if they do, tend to regain weight after some years.
Why diets don’t work?
There are two reasons for a diet plan to be unsuccessful:
As mentioned earlier, improper diet increases stress, and stress increases your appetite. Your appetite is also controlled by chemical, neurotransmitters in your brain. Stress and unhealthy foods create an imbalance in the neurotransmitters which increases your appetite making you crave for foods you are not supposed to eat. This will increase your weight making you fat.
You are at two extremes regarding your dieting. Either you are following a strict diet, eating only nutritious food, avoiding sweets and fatty foods. Or when it fails you start eating all unhealthy foods. There is no strategy.
Given below are some techniques you can follow:
Eat what you want:
Don’t deprive yourself of the food you love eating. You will start craving for that food. So indulge in ‘paradox technique’. Eat what you want but in a moderate amount. Very soon you will stop craving for it.
Eat slowly:
Enjoy your food and eat slowly. When you eat fast, you will not know how much you are eating and you will pass the point of satisfaction and might overeat. When you eat slowly, your body will let you know as soon as you are full.
Divert your mind:
Do you feel hungry when you are sad, happy, bored or depressed? Then you are an emotional eater. Try to divert your mind when you experience such emotions. You can listen to music, talk to you friend over the phone, watch a movie etc, to relax your mind.
Set a goal. Eat moderately, exercise regularly, follow the techniques, enjoy your life and your body will do the rest.
