Although there is still a controversy whether organically grown foods or traditionally grown foods are better, people have started recognizing and appreciating the benefits derived from organic foods. Organic foods benefit the individual, society and the environment.
Benefits of organically grown foods:
Protects the health of the future generation:
In traditional farming, when cultivating various crops the farmers uses a lot of chemicals like pesticides and herbicides. Even after harvesting, traces of these chemicals used for growing remain in the fruits and vegetables when they reach the markets. When these traditionally grown fruits and vegetables are consumed by the people, these pesticides and herbicides enter their body and get accumulated.
Studies have proved that organic foods have less pesticide compared to traditional foods. Traditional crops have 71% of pesticides, whereas organically grown foods have only 13%. But out of this 13% half of the pesticides where due to the presence of past pesticides used and the other half is due to drift from adjacent farms or mislabeling. Organically grown foods are pure and free from harmful pesticides.
Protects the quality of water:
The pesticides used to grow traditional crops remains in the ground and contaminate the underground reserves of water, and when this water is consumed, they enter human body.
Nutritional benefits:
Organically grown food has been found to be tastier and contain 305 more antioxidants than traditionally grown foods. Because of this high level of antioxidants, organically grown foods reduce the risk of caner, cataracts, and coronary heart diseases. Antioxidants also help to slow down the process of skin and muscle deterioration. Organic foods help to save costs incurred for such diseases. Mass production of vegetables also makes them lose nutritional value.
Cost:
Organically grown foods are a little more expensive than traditionally grown foods, about 57% more. But then you will anyway have to spend for cleaning the water that is contaminated or the wastes which are released by the pesticide manufactures which are hazardous to health, and also for treating various diseases caused by pesticides intake. So don’t you think it is better to spend some money for healthy foods?
Preserve biodiversity:
The farmers growing organic foods use a wide variety of good quality seeds which increase the taste of the food, than traditional growers.
Health benefits:
The pesticides and insecticides used by traditional farmers, has been found to cause cancer. Pesticide is also associated with health complaints such as skin diseases, respiratory illness and birth defects. The pesticides sprayed in the fields drift and spread all over the neighborhood, affecting all the people living there. So organically grown food protects the health of the individuals and also protects the environment.
To conclude, although organically grown foods is more expensive than traditionally grown foods, persons who are concerned about their health, must start taking organic foods, which will keep them healthy and free from many diseases especially cancer.
