Relationship between metabolism and weight loss

Metabolism is basically the process of converting food to energy and it happens in the muscles and organs within the body – it is what most of us call ‘burning calories’. It therefore follows that boosting your metabolism is essential in your weight loss endeavors. However, significant weight gain or overweight condition is not related to a low metabolism only, although this can be one of the causes. It is important to seek medical attention to determine whether a medical condition could be responsible for the weight loss. Whatever the case, a high metabolic is essential for the smooth functioning the body activities. Below are some ways through which the metabolic rate can be boosted.

No skipping breakfast

Dinner and breakfast are usually taken many hours apart. Skipping breakfast leads to the brain sending a message to the body warning it of imminent starvation. When this happens the body reacts by lowering the metabolic rate in order to conserve energy. To keep the metabolisms in top gear when one wakes up, it is good practice to eat a healthy breakfast comprising of complex carbohydrates which are a good source of energy to keep the metabolism revving throughout the day.

Eat earlier in the day

According to research, you can increase your metabolism and consequently lose weight simply by eating a substantial breakfast and lunch and by taking a light dinner. It is good practice to have one’s dinner early in the evening so as to allow the food to be metabolized before going to bed. 4 hours are sufficient for this to take place.

Eat more than 1200 calories daily

A sure way of keeping the metabolism humming throughout is by ingesting more than 1200 calories of food on a daily basis. Eating less than this amount will translate to less energy and consequently slow down metabolism.

Eat snack frequently

Snacks contain complex carbohydrates which are fuel for the metabolic system. Healthy snacks include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. One would do well to avoid processed products – unhealthy sugars – at all cost.

Snacking is also important in that it prevents you from becoming too hungry since the hungrier you are, the less control you will have over what and how much you will consume later on.

Drink a lot of water

Experts recommend a daily water intake of more than sixty ounces. The body metabolism needs a lot of water to function smoothly. One should avoid alcoholic beverages as alcohol depresses your metabolism and stimulates the appetite.

Do aerobic exercise

Doing simple aerobic exercise such as aerobic dancing, walking, swimming, stationary cycling and jogging everyday, preferably in the morning, improves metabolism. This is because the human body is supposed to be active every day. In addition to the regular aerobic exercises, a brisk fifteen minute walk after lunch or in the evening will go a long way in improving the metabolism.

Eat a lot of carbohydrates

Carbohydrates have been proven to boost a person’s metabolism and they are also advantageous in that they have fewer calories per weight than fat.

The faster the metabolism, the less the weight gain and vice versa. There are several ways of increasing metabolism.
