Rum Cocktails That Won’t Completely Kill Your Diet
Rum is often enjoyed, but the truth of the matter is that it is full of calories. Add it with traditional mixers and most rum drinks are through the roof. So, you should never drink a lot of alcohol if you are worried about weight loss and gain, but one or two drinks every now and again won’t kill you. You should still choose with care.
Calories in Rum.
If you are drinking 80 proof rum you get about 60-70 calories in an ounce. If you go to a 100 proof rum you will be drinking more calories. It should also be noted that many alcoholic mixed drinks contain 1.5 to 2 ounces of rum.
Low Calorie Rum.
You can also buy a low calorie version of rum. It isn’t always easy to find, but can save you lots of calories in your few mixed drinks. You should still remember that alcohol slows down the body’s ability to burn fat so you shouldn’t drink it often, even if it is low cal.
Rum and Diet Coke.
Many rum drinkers are familiar with a rum and Coke. This popular drink can be made with diet coke for a better effect on your waist line. Beware that diet beverages can cause sugar cravings and be prepared to fight them off. Want a little more flavor? Go for a diet cherry Coke and a vanilla rum!
Diet Mojito.
Muddle mint leaves (about 12) and a lime slice in a glass. Add 6 ounces of diet lemon lime soda and one and a half ounces of rum. Add ice and stir. You can also use lime juice and club soda in place of the diet soda which is really good for those who are prone to sugar cravings.
Skinny Daiquiri.
Make a skinny daiquiri with the rum of your choice and a calorie free powdered drinks mix such as strawberry. Add a little pureed fruit, lime juice, your drink mix, four ounces of water, and your rum. Make it frozen by freezing your fruit first or adding ice cubes and blending.
Caipirinha.
Place one fresh lime, quartered, into a shaker glass and add about 1 tablespoon of water and 1 packet of Splenda. Squish with a spoon or muddler until Splenda is dissolved and lime is a mushed. Add 1 and ½ ounce of rum and ice cubes. Shake well and pour into a glass. Enjoy, but remember that sweeteners can cause sugar cravings.
Getting Creative.
Rum is one of the easier alcohols to experiment. Try replacing the high calorie mixers in your favorite drinks with low calorie options. Experiment with different types of rum. And try new things, you just might find a new favorite for you and all your friends.
Drinking alcohol and trying to lose weight just doesn’t go together well. But for the occasional drink it can be a fun way to go. Just remember to drink in moderation and to make sure you watch what you eat with your drinks.
