The Fat of the Matter and Other Diet Myths

Dieting is the trend nowadays. Everybody wants to diet. There are so many weight loss plans and each plan has got thousands of followers. Some people are successful while majority of the people are unsuccessful in losing weight. For most of the people who start dieting, it might last only for a month, and then due to one reason or the other, they quit their plan.

Sometimes people start a weight loss program and stick on to it for some time, by dieting and exercising. But later on deprivation of food and sometimes hunger, make them quit the plan and go back to their unhealthy eating habits.

“The Fat of the Matter and Other Diet Myths” is by Dr. Nikki Goldman Ph.D. In her book “Success for the Diet Dropout” she tells about some techniques for people to lose weight naturally, without being obsessed and preoccupied by diets and weight.

Feed your body the food it requires:

Caryn went on a diet plan, and after some years, she found out she was gaining weight instead of losing weight. She was frustrated and de-motivated. She could not understand what went wrong. In spite of following a well balanced diet, she felt hungry most of the time. In fact one hour after a meal, she started to feel hungry. She knew that nothing was wrong with her diet plan, because it was a much accepted and recognized plan. So she came to the conclusion that something was wrong with her.

The problem with Caryn was that she was not feeding her body the food it required. Then she learnt the “Success for the Diet Dropout” method. She was asked to increase the amount of her food. She was asked to eat more grains and beans. Although her calorie intake increased, she found that she was reducing weight.

When you are deprived of certain foods, you start craving for excess amounts of foods. Research was conducted on laboratory rats. At first they were given restricted diet, but when the restriction was removed, it was found out that they increased their consumption of food.

Don’t starve:

People on a diet sometimes may not be able to maintain the level of deprivation and have the urge to overeat. They then feel depressed and discouraged and this again increases the urge to eat. This is working against one’s own natural instinct, like in the case of Jonathan. He was upset because he could not remain without eating for 24 hours. Actually his expectation is unrealistic.

The case of Janie was similar. Janie was on a diet and she felt hungry at nights. But she tried to ignore her body’s instinct and tried not to eat. She was upset when she had a sandwich one evening. She was then made to realize that just like Jonathan, her expectation was also unrealistic.

Don’t ignore the urge to eat. Don’t deprive the body that food it requires to sustain. If you are feeling hungry you should eat, and you need not eat if you are not hungry.

To conclude “when hungry, eat; when not hungry, don’t eat.”- Stomach Owners’ Instruction Manual.
