Green tea is all the rage now with all sorts of supplements being sold for weight loss purposes. Others are claiming that you can drink green tea and lose weight. The real question comes down to, “What’s the truth?” Can you really drink green tea to lose weight?

Simple Answer.
The simple answer is- Yes. You can indeed drink green tea for weight loss. But the answer may be a little more complicated then that.

EGCG.
The reason that green tea is good for weight loss is a chemical called EGCG or epigallocateghin gallate. This chemical is readily available in green tea and causes a process called thermogenesis to take place. Thermogenesis is the process in which the body reacts with EGCG.

Claims.
Some supplements and books claim that green tea is the key to a thinner you. You start taking the supplements or drinking the tea and you will lose weight and inches. This will make you look much thinner and it doesn’t take much work. This may be a little bit of a simplification of the claims, however this sounds about right for many of them.

The Truth.
The truth is a little different then the claims. If you drink enough green tea then your body will burn an extra 70-80 calories a day. It never burns more then 80 calories a day. Assuming that everything else in your life remains the same then you will burn about 1 extra pound every 44 days. In a year that would be about 8.3 pounds.

Considering that you aren’t working to burn that 8 pounds that’s not so bad. However, it isn’t the same thing as losing 10 pounds in the next month, getting slim from drinking green tea, or any of the other claims you might come across.

How Much Tea?
Now comes a part that is difficult for many of us. In order to see these results you need to drink a minimum of three cups of green tea. Most studies would suggest you actually drink five cups. That’s a lot of green tea for most of us.

Taking In Tea.
If you struggle to drink green tea try it cold. Try it mixed with fruit or mint “teas”. Try it as white tea which is less bitter. You can even add honey to it.

Green Tea Supplements.
For most people it seems a whole lot easier to take in green tea supplements. After all it comes all packaged without the five cups. The problem with green tea supplements is that you have no way of knowing how much caffeine is packed into one of those supplements. Caffeine in high doses can be dangerous, so it is safer to drink your way into a thinner you.

Green tea can help you lose weight. Sure it isn’t a lot and you won’t become a super model just by drinking tea. However, as part of a healthier diet and exercise plan it can make a difference.
