Weight Loss Surgery- Dangers Lurking Underneath
When you want to lose weight desperately you try to take all measures until you get the results you want to achieve. However that is not what really happens all the time. There are people who desperately need medical intervention to achieve weight loss. Usually these types of people are on the end of their ropes but are still hoping to lose weight even if it means undergoing a surgery.
But the thing is that any operation whether medical, cosmetic or any type of surgery there is poses health risks underneath. Even if post surgical procedures are being followed it does not guarantee a better lifestyle and healthier life all the time. Emotional and physical anxiety can also be experienced if it is not handled properly by the patient. So let’s take a look at some of the dangers lurking underneath weight loss surgery.
Restrictive Surgery
Restrictive surgery would include vertical banded gastroplasty and adjustable gastric banding to name some. Health complications here are usually infrequent. Though patients must be made aware that bleeding and infection can sometimes cause early morbidity in as much as 10 percent of the patients. There is also at least 1% fatality rate. Also restrictive surgery has long term complications like gastric prolapse, severe GERD and staple line dehiscence to name a few.
Purely Malabsorptive Surgery
This type of surgery is purely malabsorptive and is rapid where weight loss is sustained but without the need for any eating habit changes. But then the disadvantage and risks are more significant and this includes severe nutritional deficiencies, severe metabolic complications, late-onset liver failure and so many more.
Stomach Stapling
Some of the health risks of stomach stapling includes hearburn, risks of some nutritional deficiencies, vomiting risks especially if food is not chewed properly. Also if exercise guidelines and diet is not being strictly followed then weight loss is reduced.
Lap Band Surgery
Although proven to be a less drastic procedure like stomach stapling this is more known compared to bypass operations. Weight reduction though can sometimes become smaller than expected because patients can easily cheat on this.
The results are also extremely variable because some may only get to achieve little weight loss while others can get excellent weight loss. Some risks this surgery poses includes vomiting and heartburn, stomach pains especially when over eating, during liquid diet nutritional deficiency may be experienced, band leakage or slippage may happen, internal infection risks is very high.
Those are just some of the risks that lie underneath weight loss surgery. As much as possible when making decisions that defines life changing experiences it must not be thought over a month or two only. Its effect may be permanent and it could change your life either negatively or positively.
Bear in mind that again the risks vary widely to the type of weight loss surgery performed, patient- health, patient recovery, technique used and also as to the skill of the surgeon and its surgical team. Never trade surgeons experience over what could be a cheaper service without any credibility.
