It is more important to keep up a diet!

Have you gained weight again and are you ready to get rid of them? Are you wondering which diet is the best diet to loose weight fast and can’t you make up your mind? In that case we have good news for you.

American scientist have discovered that it does not matter which diet you choose to loose weight fast. What matters is that you keep the diet you choose and not give up.

This is good news because there are so many diets that people often find it difficult to choose one. How could you, as a layman, know what methods give the best results? American researchers of the Tufts-New England Medical Centre in Boston, who have been looking for the answer to this question, have compared the most popular diets in America. Their results were published in the Journal of the American medical Association (JAMA) at Wednesday, 5 February.

The researchers have selected 160 adults with overweight for this experiment. These people were randomly divided into four groups and they followed a diet for one year. The first group used the Atkins-diet, which is based on low carbohydrates and high fat. The second group ate little fat in the vegetarian Ornish-diet. The third group used the Weight Watchersprogramme, which advises toe at small portions to reduce the amount of calories. The fouth group used the Zone-diet, which means they could eat much carbohydrates and proteins, combines with a supplement of omega-3 fish oil.

All the volunteers who had kept their diets had lost some kilo’s. The difference between the diets was minimal and negligible. Apart from that, the risks of heart diseases, such as cholesterol, was reduced for every one of them. The conclusion of the experiment was that it does not matter which diet you use, as long as you don’t give up.

The experiment also showed that it is not easy to keep a diet. About 40 percent of the volunteers quit before the year was over. Especially people who were on the extreme Atkins- or Ornish-diets. The most important reason was that the people did not like the food they had to eat. The researchers state that more people would keep up if they could choose which diet they wanted to keep diet.

Wim Saris, professor of human nutrition in the University of Maastricht, was not surprised to hear these results. He says the amount of calories is what matters in the end. It does not matter whether these calories come from fat, carbohydrates or proteins. This is not a new idea and we already knew that from other researches.

The professor of human nutrition thinks it is a good thing that it is shown once more that it does not matter which diet you choose. There is no such thing as a miracle-diet. Saris himself prefers the Weight Watchers diet because people can still eat anything. In limited amounts, of course. He advises against the Atkins-diet because people often eat more fat and he states the Atkins-diet results in gaining weight.

Finally, Win Saris has some advice. The first is: avoid alcohol. The body cannot immediately store the alcohol but has to break it down first. This means that other nutrients cannot be processed and will be stored immediately. The second advice is not to drink too much soda and fruit juice. These things can cause weight gain.
